The vocal pop group Wilson Phillips was formed in 1986 by sisters Carnie and Wendy Wilson (daughters of Beach Boy Brian Wilson) and long-time friend Chynna Phillips (daughter of John Phillips from the Mamas and the Papas), who were all in their late teens at the time. The trio recorded several demos which eventually caught the attention of songwriter Glen Ballard, who became their collaborator. Wilson Phillips' 1990 self-titled debut album went on to sell over 10 million copies worldwide and was supported by a world tour. The trio returned less than a year later with Shadows and Light, which went platinum.
Following the release of Shadows and Light Chynna Phillips left Wilson Phillips to begin a solo career, releasing her debut Naked And Sacred in 1995; that same year she married actor William Baldwin and went on to appear in a Broadway musical. The Wilson sisters went on to record a 1993 Christmas album; Carnie Wilson later had her own talk show, created a workout video, and designed a line of clothing. In 1997 Carnie and Wendy Wilson, along with their father, Brian Wilson, released a new album as the Wilsons, titled Monday Without You.
