The Ropes

Speaking four languages and intent on becoming fluent in several more, it's easy to see how The Ropes frontwoman Sharon Shy (yes, that is her real name) came to possess such a way with words. Her lyrics are filled with angst suitable for the bright-eyed teen and time-hardened soul alike. Armed with these words, her haunting yet soothing voice is set to a backdrop of noisy guitars and urgent basslines with the occasional moment of calm and tranquility that never seems to last long enough. Mirroring real life, the sound is a mixture of sugar and dirt.

The Ropes emerged in 2005 when Shy began collaborating with guitarist/producer, Toppy. Shy sang while Toppy recorded and played all instruments on the early demos that they released via the internet. The startling viral fan response made expansion the obvious next step. Toppy enlisted two of his lifelong friends with the addition of Andi Krop on guitar and Ray Patrick handling the band's demanding bass role. On drums is ex-Mars Volta drummer Blake Fleming, who recently returned from The Mars Volta / Red Hot Chili Peppers tour.

While sharing the stage with acts such as Maximo Park and spending weeks on the CMJ charts, The Ropes sold over 5000 physical and digital copies of their self-released EP in 2006. The band is currently in the studio recording their first full-length album with producer Nic Hard (The Bravery) that will be released by Warner Music Group and Rykodisc / Cordless Recordings.
