Sunshine Anderson

b. Charlotte, North Carolina, USA. A prot俫俥 of Macy Gray, urban soul singer Anderson abandoned a steady government job to pursue her musical goals. Although besotted by music from an early age, Anderson initially concentrated on a different career path, earning a B.S. in criminal justice from North Carolina Central University. It was while at Central that Anderson first struck up a musical partnership with producer Mike City. She moved to Washington, DC, to work in human resources, but subsequently decided to relocate to Los Angeles to attempt to make it as a singer.

Her partnership with City, a vice-president of Soulife Entertainment, eventually reached fruition when a recording contract was signed with Atlantic Records and Gray became her manager. Although Anderson's gruff vocals are reminiscent at times of her mentor, musically she and City opted for a far more contemporary urban sound, distancing the singer from the concurrent neo-soul scene. Buoyed by the radio success of the single "Heard It All Before", Your Woman debuted in the US Top 5 in April 2001.
