Their brilliantly raw and futuristic take on UK garage sounds like nothing else on this planet. And they've already been dubbed the Wu-Tang Clan of two-step. So Solid Crew, a 30-plus collective of very talented London DJs, MCs and producers - and just about the most exciting prospect in urban British dance music today. Also now with the ever so popular So Solid Kids it's growing into a tight family. They have inducted So Solid Kids so that the next generation of the So Solid Crew will know what's what and have great experience over all the other crews, DJ's and MC's.
Their second single, '21 Seconds', on Relentless records, follows up from 'Oh No (Sentimental Things)' which debuted the crew's cutting edge blend of R&B, Rap, Ragga and Garage beats, a blistering sound that's come straight from the underground raves and pirate radio stations of South London.
Leader of the sprawling So Solid family is 21-year-old MC Megaman, a smooth talking Battersea homeboy who has been promoting garage parties and MCing at jungle clubs since he was a teenager. Of the So Solid sonic sensibility he says: "It's a whole new sound. We're using straight R&B and Hip Hop sound but with a little bit of Ragga flavour, and that's what makes the difference."
His number one partner in crime is Romeo aged 20, MC who grew up in the same South London patch, listening to the same Ragga music. He start off MCing to Ragga at Notting Hill Carnival. And let's not forget the gorgeous Lisa Maffia, 21, a class-A singer whose angelic vocals can be heard splashed over the new single.
The So Solid collective originally came about a couple of years back when Megaman hooked up with now defunct pirate station called Supreme FM and came into contact with like-minded souls like MC Mac and DJ PDS. Already promoting events like Garage Delight at the Colosseum and Chunnel Club, Mega decided to step up the So Solid brand, slapping the name on the top of flyers, getting some of those all-important tunes down on vinyl and self-promoting like crazy.
The So Solid Crew are made up of a number of DJ's and MC's/vocalists: DJ Oxide, MC Mega Man, MC Neutrino, MC Asher D, MC Harvey, Billy da Kid, MC Mydus, Lisa Mafia, AC Burrell, Face, TW7, G-Man, MC Mac, DJ Swiss, Statix, Sniper, DJ Big Kid, Mr C, MC Romeo, PDS, Timeless, Scatt D, Dan Da Man, Morgan, Kaish, Mr Shabz, Gillard, Synth and chaos.
So Solid Entertainment already consists of a DJ agency, two record labels (Papermoney and So Solid Beats), a promotional division, distribution company and radio station (Delight FM), which has led to comparisons being drawn between So Solid and Puff Daddy's sprawling Bad Boy empire. Also like Sean 'Puffy' Combes, So Solid like to follow the mantra of keeping it real. At least as real as you can keep it, when your reality is about to take you out of the ghetto, into the limelight.
