Shindig

Shindig started life in the 200 capacity World Headquarters way back in 91 and has grown steadily over the years. It now resides in the recently refurbished 1350 capacity Foundation on Melbourne Street in Newcastle.

Hailed as one of the only true house clubs in the country (winning a Muzik award for Underground Club Of The Year 2001/02) Shindig has always brought in DJs who stick to their music policy and don't bow to commercial pressure. This has lead to the likes of Danny Rampling, Roger Sanchez, Deep Dish, Erick Morillo,Masters At Work and Derrick Carter requesting appearances while members of the new breed Danny Howells, Lottie, Steve Lawler,Yousef and Nic Fanciulli also love the vibe.

The industrial feel really takes you on a trip across the Atlantic with comparisons having been made with New York clubs Twilo and The Tunnel.

With one of the best sound and lighting systems at this end of the country joined with the best crowd and the booming atmosphere it is easy to understand why SHINDIG is delivering quality nights week after week to capacity crowds.

SHINDIG were also instrumental in bringing the Love Parade to Newcastle for July 2001 only to see the event cancelled at the last minute due to local licensing issues. Shindig soldiered through this and came out on top after advising RADIO ONE on a rescue package that became Britain's one and only ever Love weekend. Parties still went off all over the city with SHINDIG leading the way with the massive official Radio 1 Love Weekend party at Newcastle's Telewest Arena.

Never ones to shirk a challenge Shindig's antics yet again formed the focus of national attention when they staged one of the norths most adventurous ever parties on Times Square. Times Square is a large outdoor area situated inside the cities Centre For life. The party seen 6000 people dancing to the sounds of DJs in 3 arenas. On the mainstage Eric Morillo and Sandy Rivera housed it up while in the powerhouse DubFire from DeepDish and Steve Lawler kept it deep and dark. In the 3rd arena there was a breaks and electro vibe with The Stanton Warriors and Riton from Grand Central Recordings.

This year promises much more for Shindig, jump on board for the adventure.

2001 highlights ::: Apart from hosting its 9th Birthday at Founadtion Shindig was also instrumental in bringing "The Love Parade" to Newcastle in July 2001. Unfortunately the whole event was cancelled at last minute due to local licensing issues but Shindig soldiered on and went ahead with their massive official Radio One Love Weekend party at Newcastles Telewest Arena.

The DJ line up was already one of the biggest Newcastle had ever seen, but with the cancellation of "The Love Parade" Shindig found room to accommodate DJs Sasha and Erick Morillo from the Radio One main stage along wit the already billed Pete Tong, John Digweed, Darren Emerson, Steve Lawler, Layo and Bushwacka, Yousef, Seb Fontaine and Tim Deluxe. The night sold over 7500 tickets and was broadcast live on Radio One.

2002 highlights ::: Shindigs 10th Birthday Weekend, Bank Holiday Weekend 4th/5th May 2002.

For a celebration of 10 years of Shindig we staged a "double header" weekend on May Bank Holiday 2002.

On the Saturday we hosted the first part of our 10th Birthday at Foundation with DJs Deep Dish playing a 5 hour set. This night was one for the "true house" people with Deep Dish echoing the sound that Shindig has become renowned for.

The 2nd part of our 10th Birthday celebrations was a massive outdoor party at Baltic Square. Baltic Square is the large entrance area to the Baltic Art Centre situated at the Gateshead side of the Millennium Bridge. This area is the new focal point of the regions regeneration and Newcastle/Gatesheads city of culture bid.

On the night we had DJs Roger Sanchez and Radio Ones Yousef laying down the beats for over 2500 people on the banks of the River Tyne. The night was also broadcast live across the Galaxy Radio Network.

A fitting end to "the first" 10 years of SHINDIG
