Rotating Leslie met at school in Hertfordshire when they were just 12 years old, they formed a friendship through there love of music, comedy and whatever cheap thrills they could get there hands on. After playing in various bands they discovered the joys of the 90’s rave scene and all that went with it. They immersed themselves in the scene for years, putting on club nights, free outdoor parties and DJing wherever they could.
After years of abuse they decided to change direction and form the band. To start a fresh they moved out of London and into a tumbledown old farmhouse in Hertfordshire, The Manor would be the home of Rotating Leslie for the next few years.
Here, with brother and bass player Stuart, they released a limited fanbase album 'Infrequent Mild Peril' - a collection of demos which sold out of it's 1000 copies in a matter of weeks. Copies are now exchanging hands for £20 on ebay!
One year and three drummers later, they recorded their debut single 'Fire!Fire!'. Put out as a self-funded, limited-edition, signed 7" on their own 'Hand Made Rave' label at the end of the summer, they quickly sold out the 500 pressings and received airplay on XFM, Virgin and BBC 6. Also with the help of thousands of downloads they were named BBC London’s band of the week by Gary Crowley (The first DJ to play on London’s 104.9 XFM!).
The video for the single, which was filmed for nothing in their front garden, is currently being playlisted by MTV2!!
They have gained a large and loyal following from ‘Woodendstock’, the annual free festival at their farm, and their incendiary London warehouse parties and extensive gigging over the last 12 months. This has seen them support The View at the launch party for E4’s Skins show, The Rifles and Goldie Lookin Chain to name a few. They were even asked if the Subways could support them at a secret hometown gig earlier this year.
This summer they headlined the Isle of Wight Festival New Band’s Stage and played the Secret Garden Party. Filled with the same passionate energy as their music, the live shows are just as infectious, with festival crowds singing along with songs they’ve never even heard!
NME described their sound as 'gritty, harmonic, art pop'; call it what you will, they have steered away from the obvious indie clichés and instead, relied on their diverse influences from 80’s metal to electro house and created something fresh and exciting
The band recently put down some new material at Eden Studios in the same room where Definitely Maybe, Screamadelica and Never Mind the Bollocks were recorded. The results of which were played to great acclaim by former Sex Pistol, Steve Jones, on his L.A. radio show.
Constant song-writing from the band is bringing a stream of new material and with their second single Radio (out now) also selling out in the first few weeks, the Leslies continue to do what they do best and a result they are starting to turn a few heads.
