Life is strange, sometimes ugly. You need humor to survive, you need courage and luck to get what you want and if you’re out there looking for love, be prepared for a few complications. Martha writes songs that touch people’s lives.
And she is hardcore. Not in the corny sense of straight outta Blaxploitation movie gold teeth and gangster glitter but in the real sense – she’s hardcore in the strength of her vision and her refusal to pander to trends she doesn’t believe in. Hardcore in her ability to ennunciate pain and anger through beauty and intelligence. Hardcore in her love of music with real musicians and chord changes, in her knowledge of her own history - whether it is the great music of the past or the timeless traditions of her ancestors.
And still Martha Redbone is pop. Pop as in hooks… as in unashamedly well crafted songs… as in the desire to reach people- bringing them together through music. Martha Redbone has friends of every race, songs from every genre and roots in every continent. She believes in the power of music to unite and heal, demonstrating in her songs that RnB and rock, hip hop and jazz, funk and melody can exist in harmony.
All of the songs on her debut album HOME OF THE BRAVE were written and produced by Martha with longtime writing partner Aaron Whitby. Working with an amazing NY band featuring players like Alan ‘AB’ Burroughs (Miles Davis), Jonathan Maron (Maxwell) and others (see links page), Martha has earned respect from some of the finest musicians on the NYC scene.
With co-producer Aaron Whitby, and engineers Joe Quinde (Jay-Z) and Tom Cassel (Notorious BIG) Martha has created the perfect marriage of song, music and beats to support her incredible voice - soaring, vulnerable, spirited. This girl is brave, new, strong… and free as a bird. Check it out.
