Last Week formed in 1998 around guitarist/vocalists Ido Zmishlany and Matt Reich. The duo transitioned through numerous monikers, musical styles, and supporting players before settling on drummer Neal Saini and a straightforward pop/rock sound. By 2000, the group had officially named themselves Last Week; had tapped Zmishlany's childhood pal, Yaniv Packin, as bassist; and were establishing a buzz in and around their Long Island, NY, home base. For the next few years Last Week ranged up and down the East Coast, building a live following on the club and college circuit. January 2003 found them in the studio with Tomas Constanza of alt-rockers Diffuser at the helm; the sessions produced Wouldn't It Be Good, the band's debut on wax. Then, in July of that year, the Last Week won AOL's "First Break" contest, the online service's nationwide talent search, giving its users the chance to pick an unsigned artist for exposure on its music pages and a possible recording contract. Last Week's victory nabbed them a demo deal with Atlantic and saw their single "Beautiful Girls" garner numerous spins on AOL. They continued to gig throughout the East Coast for the duration of the year. 2004 found Last Week performing on New York FM outlet WHTZ, doing dates on the East Coast leg of the Warped Tour, and logging studio time with AAA/Hot AC mixer Brian Malouf. The band continued to get support from WHTZ in 2005. The station added a new version of the band's song "Unpredictable", and plans were made to offer Last Week's debut EP as a download from its site.
