Watch Katy Perry meeting herself in new video Wide Awake
As promised one week ago, Katy Perry has premiered the new clip in suport of her final chapter "Wide Awake" off the 'Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection'. The is a kiss-off to the entire era, with nods to Katy's other videos and a dark side underneath her bright, cheerful, candy-coated public persona.
The fairytale-themed clip, directed by Lance Drake, opens up after the "California Gurls" shoot, with Katy removing her wig, staring into a mirror, and seeing a gothier, Craft-ier Katy staring back — and ends with a Prince Charming getting punched in the face.
But Katy's meeting with herself as a little girl - whos name apparently is 'Katheryn', is the most emotional scene of the video. The singer gets trapped behind glass by paparazzi, and almost succumbs to insanity, but she's saved to the enchanted land of self-empowerment by a little magic. There are nods to all sorts of fairy tales, as well as Katy's favorite music video trope: something flying out of her breasts, a la "Firework". The best part we love is when Katy punches Prince Charming right in his charming face as a punishment for touching her hip.
"I love this song so much," she told MTV News about the song. "It was a song that I hadn't written for Teenage Dream. I was doing this movie and they asked me if I wanted to write an end-title song for the movie and I was like, 'I know exactly what I want to say.' I was really kind of dying to write another song at that point. I didn't want to wait until I did a whole new record, and it's kind of the perfect last word of me at this moment."
This video makes the entire Teenage Dream cycle actually feel like a storybook that's just been completed. Watch it in here.
