Katinas

In an industry of transition and uncertainty there are some things that will always remain. “Music is a universal language”! It has the dynamic to transcend culture, generations, social and economic class instantaneously. “We’ve been doing this for quite some time now”, explains John, one of the lead singers. “We wanted to make sure that from here on out, we are very deliberate about everything we do as a band”.

“Still”, the new release from the Katinas was birthed out of that mindset. “More than just coming out with a new CD, we feel like we’re finally at a place in our lives where we are content with who we are, and where we are called to go”, says James, bassist and twin brother of John. Although the band of brothers from the Samoan Islands have been touring and recording for the past 15 years, “Still”, is the first release off of their own Record label, Destiny Productions.

“Writing and recording this record was so natural for us”, describes Sam, keys and vocals. “We weren’t in a rush trying to make deadlines. It was an integrated effort for all five of us to take our time and not only write and choose our strongest songs, but also to listen and stay accessible to outside material.” Eight of the ten tracks were co-written by the Katinas themselves. Also enlisted on the writing are band-guitarist Paul David, Sharee Katina (John’s wife) and Chrissy Katina (James’ wife formerly of Zoe Girl). At the end of the day, we feel like “Still” is the heartbeat of what we want to say as a family”. “It’s a blend of rock and soul which is who we are stylistically at the core”, adds youngest brother Jesse. “I guess you reach a point in life when you realize that you’re at your very best when you’re doing what you enjoy the most. That’s what we did on this record”.

Co-produced by the brothers, “Still” is a timeless array of songs that worship God and inspire people. “We’ve always believed that music is our platform to extend the message of hope and love”, says Joe, drums and vocals. The songs on this record are just a vehicle to continue to drive this message to whoever will listen. The stirring ballad “Praying for you” is simply a reminder that it’s not over yet. No matter how arduous your situation might be, God’s got a great plan for you. Just hold on! “Free” is a fervent declaration of adoration for being set free from the bondage of sin. The funk-filled track “Praise” might come across as a surprise but really represents the brothers’ gospel and Motown roots.

Prepared by the breakthroughs and challenges of their own journey, once again the brothers fortify themselves to ingress a new frontier. “We’ve been doing this for a while now but we still feel and are always doing our best to stay current and relevant to everyone who listens to our music” says Jesse. “Life can get crazy and difficult, but no matter where you’re at God loves you and is always waiting for you…….Still”!
