Julio Jaramillo

Julio Alfredo Jaramillo Laurido, was born on October 1, 1935 in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The song, Nuestro Juramento, which was recorded in 1956, became his first hit and broke all album sales records which after more than forty years, is still something quite difficult to achieve. as a result of his success, Ecuador became a very popular place in Latin America. From Mexico to Buenos Aires, passing through Lima and Caracas, his albums became the musical demand of those times. Julio didn’t even recognize what was going on until he arrived at Montevideo to what was a multitude of screaming fans dubbing him as “Mr. Juramento”.
Many of his co-patriots later lamented the lack of affection and acceptance he deserved from his country. It is because of this that Jaramillo searched for success in other Latin American countries as well as in Spain. He was considered by many as the best Pasillo singer; Jaramillo also sang and recorded several boleros, waltzs, tangos and rancheras. To date he is said to be one of the best singers from Latin America. On the evening of February 9th, 1978, after having laughed hysterically at a joke someone told him, the beloved Jaramillo passed away in his native Ecuador. He was so deeply loved by his fans that nearly 200,000 of them gathered to render him homage. The massive crowds blocked all traffic as they stood in lines clinging to his memory, carrying his coffin as they bid farewell to their biggest idol, to the songbird of Ecuador.
