Johnny Gill

n preparation for Johnny being honored as a Hero and Legend on September 25, 2005, I researched his musical credits. Here is my version of his long, extraordinary music career.

Johnny's credits for 1983 include his first album, titled "Johnny Gill" released on Atlantic/Cotillion. On this album, Johnny showed himself to be a "musical genius," playing guitar, bass, bongos, and drums in addition to his lead and background vocals. Johnny's vocals on this album sounded just as mature and perfect as they do now. If you haven't heard Johnny sing "If Something is Wrong With My Baby," try to get a copy of this CD so you can enjoy the beauty and perfection of his voice, even at such a young age.

In 1984, Johnny hit the charts with his duet with Stacey Lattisaw, "Perfect Combination." This song made it to the number 10 spot on the R&B charts and made it into the Hot 100, peaking at number 75.

In 1985, Johnny's second album "Chemistry" was released on Atlantic/Cotillion. It included the song, "Half Crazy" which reached 26 on the R&B charts and is still a favorite of Johnny Gill fans everywhere. Another song from this album, "Can't Wait Till Tomorrow" also achieved success, charting at number 49 on the R&B charts.

In 1988, upon the invitation of Michael Bivins, Johnny Gill became the new 5th member of the original boy band, New Edition. For some die hard Bobby Brown fans, this move was hard to accept. However, music critics overwhelmingly agree that the addition of Johnny Gill began the "grown up" chapter in the New Edition story.

The first New Edition album including Johnny Gill, "Heartbreak," was released by MCA in 1988. New Edition's most successful album to date, it yielded 5 songs that charted, including the Johnny Gill co-lead "Can You Stand the Rain" which reached the number one spot on the Billboard R&B charts on February 4, 1989.

A song from this album that was not released as a single, "Boys to Men," contains one of the most memorable performances by Johnny and remains a crowd pleaser at New Edition concert performances. It was revealed by Johnny, during the VH1 Behind the Music special on New Edition, that his "over singing" on this song was in protest for not receiving what he believed was better material to showcase his talent. Which just goes to show, even when Johnny is being bad, he is still very, very good!

In 1989, Johnny scored another chart appearance as the vocalist on "One Love" from saxophonist George Howard's album, "Reflections.

In addition to playing bass guitar on Eddie Murphy's song "Bubble Hill" and providing finger snaps on Janet Jackson's hit "Escapade," Johnny contributed "Give Love on Christmas Day" to the Motown compilation "Christmas Cheers from Motown."

Most notably, on his duet with Stacy Lattisaw, "Where Do We Go From Here," which was released in 1989, Johnny reached the number one spot on the R&B charts for a second time.

In 1990, Johnny Gill made everyone stand up and take notice with the release of his second self titled album, his most successful solo album to date.

"Johnny Gill (1990)," which spent 67 weeks on the Billboard Top 100 R&B charts, debuted at #46 on May 5, 1990. The very next week, on May 12, 1990, it entered the top 20, where it stayed for 36 consecutive weeks. One week later, on May 19, 1990, it entered the top 10 where it stayed for 25 consecutive weeks. The album battled against "Please Hammer Don't Hurt Em" for the number one spot for 10 weeks, winning that battle the weeks of June 30, 1990, August 4, 1990, and August 11, 1990.

This album also spent 60 weeks on the Billboard Hot 200 charts, debuting at #100 on May 5, 1990. On May 26, 1990 it entered the top 20, where it stayed 19 consecutive weeks, and on July 14, 1990 it cracked the top 10, peaking at number 8 on July 28.

Four songs from this album charted for Johnny on both the R&B and the Hot 100 Singles charts. "Wrap My Body Tight" enjoyed 4 weeks on the Hot 100 and 18 weeks on the R&B Singles chart, where it took over the number one spot on April 13, 1991. "Fairweather Friend" spent 16 weeks on the Hot 100 and 17 Weeks on the R&B Singles chart, where it tried hard to push another Babyface song "Giving You the Benefit" from the top, but had to settle for peaking at number two on October 13, 1990. The lead single from the album, "Rub You the Right Way," spent 23 weeks on the Hot 100 charts, making it all the way to number 3 and 18 weeks on the R&B Singles chart, reaching the top on May 19, 1990.

Johnny's signature song, "My, My, My," had an impressive 16 week run on the Hot 100 charts, where it peaked at number 10. It had the longest run of any song on the album on the R&B Singles Chart, lasting 24 weeks and reaching number one on July 14, 1990. The songwriters, Babyface and Darrell Simmons, won the BMI R&B song of the year award and were nominated for Best R&B Song at the 33rd Grammy Awards.

Johnny, himself, was nominated for a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance (being nudged out by none other than Luther Vandross). He was victorious at the Soul Train Music Awards receiving both the Best R&B/Urban Contemporary Single Male and Best R&B/Urban Contemporary Album Male Awards.

In 1991 and 1992, Johnny kept it going by appearing as a guest performer on soundtracks and other artists' singles. Most notably, he was featured on the soundtrack for New Jack City singing "I'm Still Waiting," which spent 12 weeks on the R&B Singles chart. He lent his strong, manly vocals to complement Shanice on her singles "Silent Prayer" and "You Ain't All That" plus "Letter to the Future" by Heavy D and the Boyz. Our favorite guest appearance that year, of course, were his vocals and superior dance moves on the remix of BBD's "Word to The Mutha" (sorry, Johnny, I couldn't resist...if you would have just kept your tongue in your mouth)!

Johnny sang the hook over rappers Shabba Ranks, "Slow and Sexy," and MC Brains, "Brains Goin' Cra-ze." Two more soundtrack appearances, "Let's Just Run Away" from Mo Money soundtrack and "There U Go" from Boomerang" rounded out Johnny's 1991-1992 releases.

In 1993, Johnny released "Provocative," an album that repeated the formula from his 1990 release "Johnny Gill," but with less success.

Still, "Provocative" spent 20 weeks on the Hot 200 chart, peaking at #14, and was a Hot Shot Debut at #4 on the R&B Charts, where it spent 46 weeks.

Four singles charted from this album. "Long Way From Home," "Quiet Time to Play," and "I Got You" all spent double digit weeks on the R&B Singles chart. "The Floor" spent double digit weeks on both the R&B Singles chart and the Hot 100 Singles chart.

1994 through 1995 represents the first down time for Johnny since 1988. Gladys Knight released a song in 1994 that featured Johnny on background vocals, but that's about it. Other than appearing on tribute and compilation albums, Johnny disappeared.

Although 1990's "Johnny Gill" was Johnny's most successful album in sales, 1996's "Let's Get the Mood Right" is my all-time favorite album by anyone.

Approaching 30 while recording this album, Johnny's age was finally catching up with his voice. The result is a collection of vocal performances that I lustfully refer to as CD sex.

With "Let's Get the Mood Right," forget the title, forget the words (how in the world did the man and woman in "My, My, My" break up anyway). Just listen to the voice. The jazzy, sexy, sensuousness of his vocals sets the tone for the rest of this Gillicious album.

I challenge any woman to turn down the lights, put on head phones, listen to "Touch," and not want to touch him here, touch him there, kiss him here, kiss him there!

"Maybe" is my "why I love Johnny so much" theme song. It has saved so many bad days for me that I owe Johnny a huge IOU. It's his voice, his singing, the sounds, the touching my soul and filling up all the empty places that make this song my all time favorite vocal performance by anyone, ever!

"Having Illusions" sounds a little Jon B-ish, but Johnny plays his vocal instrument so masterfully that it keeps things flowing.

"Bring it On" is Johnny getting it on right in your ear. When I'm listening to this song I keep thinking if Johnny goes "ssssss" one more time I'm going to climb right into that CD and ooooooooh!!!

I have literally had to get up and walk away from "Take Me I'm Yours," especially around 4:00 into the song when he starts playing his vocal instrument like a virtuoso. You are not supposed to feel a voice in some of the places where you can feel Johnny's voice...it just isn't right!

"Your Body" is such a great vocal melody for Johnny that I don't even mind the Roger Troutman voice box thing. Makes a sister want to get her tubes untied when he starts asking can we make babies, can we make babies, can we make a family? And let's not talk about the scene in the video where he climbs on the pool table...makes a sister wish she was a pool table (minus that woman in the video, of course)!

"So Gentle" has that same vocal feeeeeeeeeeeeling that you get in the early songs. It's like the cigarette after a very satisfying romp. This song puts a perfect ending to a perfect album.

During early 1997, Johnny was featured on two Soundtrack albums. He sang "Fire and Desire" with Coko from SWV on the Booty Call soundtrack and "All He's Supposed to Be" on The Sixth Man soundtrack.

Johnny joined two other superstars to form the singing group LSG, whose debut album "Levert Sweat Gill" debuted on the Billboard 200 in the number 4 spot on November 29, 1997 and remained on this chart for a total of 42 weeks. On the same date, it debuted at number two on the top R&B and Hip Hop Albums chart, where it spent 50 weeks.

On November 1, 1997, "My Body" debuted at number 10 on the Hot 100 charts and remained in the top 10 for 14 of its 23 weeks in the Hot 100. It flew to the number one spot on the R&B charts, reaching the peak on November 15, 1997 and holding the top for six weeks of the 25 weeks on this chart.

Between LSG and LSG2, Johnny was included on at least 40 recordings, including the "Ladies Man" soundtrack, "Ricardo Campana" by Ricky Bell, and several Motown compilations. However, I'm proudest of Johnny's venture into the world of musical theater during these years.

In 2001, Johnny and Ralph Tresvant appeared in the gospel based musical "Listen to Your Woman." Although I couldn't find a review of Johnny's performance, I did locate this from an article about the play...

Paper: The Dallas Morning News Title: UNORIGINAL SIN - Cast plods through weak 'Listen to Your Woman' Author: Tom Sime Date: May 2, 2001

There are plenty of gospel luminaries on board, but for secular musical star power, the show boasts Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill, former members of New Edition, whose hit "Can You Stand the Rain" is worked into the second act. Mr. Tresvant plays Jelly's buddy Duane, and Mr. Gill plays Jelly's brother Squirrel. Apparently their mother, a preacher's wife played by Joyce Williams, found the mercy of Jesus only after naming her children.

During 2001 and 2002, Johnny also appeared in the musical "A Fool for Love" with Dottie Peoples. Following is an excerpt from Ross Anthony's Review....

Momma and Poppa sing another sweet bold serenade right off the sofa. But, the real crowd-pleasers were Johnny Gill and Dottie People. Showing obvious command of the stage, interacting with the audience as if it were a concert audience; the huge Wiltern Theater echoed with "sporting event"-sized cheers and applause.

Johnny's third musical "Will a Real Man Please Stand Up" was well received, as witnessed by the following review...

EurWeb By Mr. Jawn Murray (Washington, D.C.) November 18, 2003

The play stars R&B signer Johnny Gill, Erica Campbell of Mary Mary, Sean Levert, original Trin-I-Tee 5 member Terry Britton, actor Clifton Powell (Friday After Next) and comedian Trent Roberts. I cant even lie -- this show epitomizes the stereotypes most people have about touring gospel plays. Nonetheless, the show is absolutely hilarious mainly because of Trent's character. Johnny sings like a madman in this musical and, believe you me, that's a compliment. I forgot how much I appreciated Johnny growing up until he delivered an incredible rendition of The Winans hit The Question Is and his own classic My, My, My.

LSG2, which spent 8 weeks on the Top 200 albums chart, enjoyed a Hot Shot Debut at number 6 on August 16, 2003. It spent 14 weeks on the Hot 100 R&B Albums, where it also had a Hot Shot debut that same week at number 3. The single "Just Friends," which featured Loon, spent 4 weeks on the R&B Singles chart.

Although this album wasn't a great chart topper or great seller, it was a great album. I spent weeks bouncing in my chair at work listening to "Just Friends." But, most of the other songs I couldn't listen to at work because they made me feel seriously womanish.

A few of the songs had close, personal meaning for me (which was scary). It was like the songwriters knew all about my personal experiences. "Wide Open," yep, been there done that! Matter of fact, it took me four years to get that closed back up!

"Shake Down," I lose my mind when they say "...put your hands up, spread your legs out!" Ladies, raise your hands and holler if you just love it when a man orders you to assume a pose!!!

"Fa Free" promises that I can get some really good loving and friendship at no cost but a few weeks ago my horoscope warned me...

It is fine to dive into a chocolate-fudge sundae and satisfy some cravings just don't become fixated on possessing something outrageously expensive.

Makes a sister go hmmm!

I could unfortunately, also really relate to "Cry and Make Love." I've seen that movie twice, but we all know how it ends, so don't go to see the sequel!

In 2004, New Edition released the album "One Love." Although this album wasn't a great chart topper, it was a great album...especially on the songs that featured Johnny's vocals. To honor Johnny's great performance on "One Love," here are excerpts from web-based reviews...

(1) "Come Home With Me" proves that Johnny Gill's voice is still one of the of the best aural panty removers around

(2) When it comes to the slow-tempo side of this disc, it is noticeable that the album begins to pick up speed. On songs like the Johnny Gill-led baby-making jam "Come Home With Me" and the aurally-enjoyable "Newness, it's obvious that this group is more comfortable singing these types of songs than up-tempo bore-fests. For example, the retrospective "Re-Write the Memories" is a song that could appeal to the lovebirds. With Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill providing heart-felt vocal over a background that's reminiscent of Force M.D's "Tender Love", this song marks what this album could've have been.

(3) New Edition manages to work because they bring such diverse voices and talents to the table. Johnny Gill brings his silky, sexy pipes which plays off and contrasts the more airy, stone cold gentleman sound. "Newness" is better with Gill taking the reins and give a Vandross worthy workout. I love it when him and Tresvant switch things up because they compliment and contrast each other so well. This ballad lives up to the ones from the past. "Re-write The Memories" is a keeper also.

(4) In the first nine songs or so, Johnny Gill is no where to be found. But he comes hard on the interlude One Love, which is a great song about brotherhood that for some reason is the shortest song on the album. In the short time that you finally hear Johnny G, it's like the album changes. Whereas most of the beginning was the Ralph and Ricky showcase, they were saving Johnny for last. On Come Home With Me Johnny does his Teddy P with the Bobby Womack aggression impersonation. There's no reason that this man shouldn't be a solo superstar with his pipes, but for some reason he isn't. Might be one of the strongest voices in R&B music today. My, My, My.

(5) COME HOME WITH ME- Produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, prominent 1990's producers (Janet Jackson, Patti LaBelle), this song shows that they need Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis for some more songs. The song's title says it all on what the song about but Johnny Gill's vocals, the slow groove of the song, the harmonized vocals and the overall arrangement of the song makes it work unlike very few of the others. The song is sexual but it works all the way. Johnny lets loose at the end and makes me see why I miss him as an artist.

(6) Johnny Gill, the best singer in the group if not the best singer of our generation. However, he only sings on a third of the album's tracks and they all show up towards the end. Very disappointing for JG fans.

(7) Like I said earlier, Johnny Gill steps into the spotlight beginning with the "One Love Interlude" and coincidentally, that's when the album begins to pick up steam. "Come Home With Me" is Gill's time to shine while other songs like "Re-Write the Memories" and "Leave Me" are just plain awesome.

(8)Come Home Tonight, allows J.G. to shine as he leads this heated slow jam. Regarded the best vocalist out of the group, Gill doesn't disappoint. Many of children can be made off this song. One Love Interlude and Rewrite the Memories are other tracks that may make you think of your significant other, on different ends of the spectrum.

2005 and 2006 have included non-stop concert and television appearances by Johnny and several recording treats.

He released the "Love Songs" compilation CD which has a cover photo that absolutely made me lose my mind! He even pulled out my favorite jewelry for the photo shoot...the "JG" bracelet!!! Honestly, Johnny (if you're listening) you are sooooooo beautiful in that photo!!!

If you haven't seen the movie "Madea's Family Reunion" you missed out on the most handsome, elegant, and talented wedding singer in movie history. That's right, not only does Johnny Gill perform "You For Me (the Wedding Song)" on the movie soundtrack, but he has a cameo role in the movie (and what a beautiful sight).

He set all kinds of records straight, along with Ralph, Ricky, Mike, and Bobby on the VH1 "Behind the Music" special on New Edition.

He performed in that grueling "30 shows in 21 days" (LOL) tour with NE in May and June of 2005 and the ongoing Spend the Night With New Edition tour in 2006.

He did the "90's Reunited," "Body and Soul" and Sexy Soul tours (booming his sexiness across North America).

He performed super sexy solo gigs at the Carmichael Center in Birmingham, the Morongo Resort (up close and oh, so personal), the Vault in Long Beach.

He hung tough with Ronnie DeVoe (and the rest of NE), dancing like a teenager in St. Lucia and at the Circle City Classic, Grand Casino, Savannah State, Funk Fest, and BET 25th anniversary (I especially love that little jig he was doing at the end of the performance...didja see it?).

And now, we hear he is working on material for the wonderful surprises he has in store for us, both recording and performing. I can't wait for more...how about you?

Since I wrote this in 2005, Johnny Gill has continued to tour with New Edition and as a solo artist, including performances with Keith Sweat and Eddie Levert, most notably a tour honoring Gerald Levert after his passing. Johnny has wowed audiences all over the world including South Africa and Tokyo.

Taking his adult voice and now adult evolution of himself as an artist to the next level, in 2008 he joined with Bobby Brown and Ralph Tresvant to form the group "Heads of State" which is currently touring the United States and abroad offering a "Rat Pack" inspired, audience participation style show that promises to lead to more recordings and chart appearances by the Real Deal Johnny Gill!
