Grand Puba

b. Maxwell Dixon, New Rochelle, New York, USA. A founder member of Brand Nubian, and before that Masters Of Ceremony, Puba left the former following their acclaimed 1990 set, One For All. He kicked off his solo career with a track, 'Fat Rat', on the Strictly Business soundtrack. When his debut album was unveiled, the smooth reggae backing was subjugated by Puba's by now familiar lyrical subject matter. Born the son of a 5% Nation Islamic father, Puba's raps reinstated that doctrine just as forcefully as he had done with Brand Nubian, but it was generally a more playful set. It included a guest appearance from Mary J. Blige. He later appeared on Fat Joe 's Represent album, performing on 'Watch The Sound'. His second solo outing, released in 1995, was a less forceful set. Puba rejoined Brand Nubian for their 1998 comeback set, Foundation.
