Gutterball is a supergroup featuring college-radio all-stars Steve Wynn (vocals, guitar), Stephen McCarthy (guitar, vocals), Bryan Harvey (vocals, guitar), Johnny Hott (drums), and Bob Rupe (bass, vocals). Every member of Gutterball has a rock & roll resumé that would be recognizable to left-of-the-dial listeners. Wynn lead the neo-psychedelic band the Dream Syndicate, an integral part of Los Angeles' Paisley Underground, in the early '80s; McCarthy is from the roots rock act the Long Ryders; Harvey and Hott once comprised House of Freaks; and Rupe is from the Silos. Gutterball was formed when Wynn spent a four-day writing vacation in the early '90s with Harvey in Richmond, VA. After the group's fifth gig, they were signed to Elektra Records and toured with the Black Crowes. In 1993, Gutterball released their self-titled debut album. Much of the record was co-written by Wynn and Harvey. Wynn moved to New York City in 1994 and recorded another solo effort, Melting in the Dark. Weasel, the follow-up to Gutterball, was released in 1995; Harvey and Hott also split up House of Freaks that year.
