Hardcore has always been a big influence in Coalesce, and the aggressiveness of this style stayed as the basic formula for Coalesce's writing. In the first year together, playing whatever basement shows they could, Coalesce was experimenting with off-times and different structures. In time they started to refine their formula for song writing and put out the 7"/cd ep "002", which was released by Earache Records. Coalesce went on the road with Bloodlet and 108 for a six week tour. The tour pushed this new approach to hardcore and their "002" ep further than they expected. After successfully completing the summer tour (on a shoestring budget of $50 a show) and scoring favor with critics everywhere, Coalesce got their break. Earache Records offered to sign them for a four album deal.
During the time of the record contract preparations, Coalesce realized they weren't ready for all the attention they were getting so they split up to take some time apart and regroup. Exactly one year later 3 of the four members got back to work on their album realizing that the album and the band needed to be completed. The original drummer did not continue due to his attending school in Baltimore. It didn't take long for Coalesce to find James, their new drummer. His music background and creativity pushed their song writing even further. Since his joining the band, Coalesce have finished their first full-length album, entitled "Give Them Rope".
Progress is made, in terms of art's development, in two main ways. 1. a heightened form of self-expression. That is, the artist comes across more clearly; the artist reveals more of him/her self. 2. The technique of the artists develops to a new level. The arts quality increases on a purely technical level. i have heard the new ep, it is progress in both senses. musically, they have ventured off into uncharted territory, again. this time with a little less heaviness, and a lot more 'feeling' for lack of a better way to describe it. (dont think 'emo' though... i said feeling not whining) and the presence of sean has changed yet again... and for the better. new topics, new honest self-expression, and attacks... just the way i like them. you know the ones that kinda make you think he's talking about you. ya, those. anyway, its their best stuff yet, and is out now on Second Nature.
Coalesce continues to put out amazing music. In case you don't have all the new releases, you can check our products page to find the label and release names. The boys just finished their Led Zeppelin cover record, and it rules. If you like Zeppelin, and who doesn,t then you will love the way Coalesce adds heaviness to Hard Rock's favorite band. Check out the accoustic songs, yes that is Sean singing - as opposed to his now trademark screaming. This records also features Matt from the Get Up Kids on backup vocals. Speaking of that, Coalese's drummer James Dewees has recently recorded with his side project Reggie and the Full Effect, with members of the beautiful Get Up Kids. Also on side project note, Nathan has recorded with his other band Casket Lottery, featuring the man he replaced in Coalesce. Both of these side projects are great, but only side-projects. Coalesce has all but inked a deal with the allmighty RELAPSE records. So, don't worry about all this talk of side bands.
