Chixdiggit

Some say CHIXDIGGIT are one of the nicest things that Canada has ever done for Sub Pop. Hailing from Calgary, Alberta (home of the annual Calgary Stampede, which has something to do with cowboys and cheap pancakes), these are four strapping lads who know how to rock and roll.

In 1990, high school friends Mike, Mark, and KJ began selling T-shirts of their fictional band "CHIXDIGGIT". An acoustic guitar owned by Mark and a $25 drumset in KJ's basement were the only evidence there was a band behind the shirt. After a significant quantity of T-shirts were sold, KJ and Mark urged Mike to buy a bass guitar, mostly to fend off rumors that there was no band at all. Although a far better drummer then singer, KJ's inability to remain seated for a consecutive ten minutes moved him to the front of the stage where his short attention span would be less harm. In need of a new drummer, CHIXDIGGIT held auditions, but were turned down by every percussionist they met, until they ran into bass player Jason Hirsch. Both likeable and versatile, Jason was easily intimidated into buying a drum set and learning the 4-4 beat.

Hoisting instruments (two guitars, bass and drums) upon their sturdy shoulders way back in 1991, CHIXDIGGIT headed west. Armed only with their youthful exuberance and keen melodic sense, they traveled across the dense Canadian tundra, intent on getting to Hollywood to make their fortune as glam rockers. On the way, they stopped in scenic Nanaimo, British Columbia (they'd heard it was a hotbed of heavy metal), where they released the multi-platinum "Best Hung Carrot In The Fridge" single on the celebrated Lance Rock label and bought some beef jerky at a convenience store.

After a lengthy year waiting for permission to cross the border, CHIXDIGGIT finally arrived in the US of A, poised and ready for superstardom. Executives from every record label in America vied for position at the southernmost reaches of the Peace Arch's green lawn, contracts in hand, trying desperately to grasp the attention of the four Calgarians. Word had spread across the nation about the young men from the north who would come to save rock and roll with their dulcet tones and ripping guitars. A bidding war ensued, with dollar figures skyrocketing. Children cheered and women fainted. Men tried in vain to emulate the band's swarthy but boyish good looks. CHIXDIGGIT took the adulation with winning modesty, averting their eyes as they weighed their options. At the end of a long, hard day, they decided to go with Sub Pop's offer of "a lot of beer and enough quarters to keep the peep booths at the Lusty Lady going."

And so, with this 15-song opus, produced by Huevos Rancherian (and fellow Calgarian) Brent Cooper, CHIXDIGGIT take their place in the annals of rock history.
