Born Ronnie Jones, pop-country singer of late '60s and early '70s, stage name from the then husband of Princess Margaret. The one-time professional golfer was discovered by Conway Twitty; toured with Twitty's show '63-'66; signed to Chart Records '68 and broght pop covers to the country chart: "Proud Mary' '69, "Take A Letter Maria' '70, "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown' '73. Moved to Epic Records, then faded from charts, but continued to tour regularly; resurfaced on AIR label '86; ran his own honky-tonk club Proud Mary in Shreveport from '92. Sister Beverly Jones Johnson (as Beverly Eagle) was vocalist in Vince Gill's first band Mountain Smoke.
