The Waking Eyes

The Waking Eyes are a four-piece rock band from Winnipeg, Manitoba formed from the remains of two now-defunct acts - The Pets and Novillero. Rusty Matyas, Matt Peters, Stephen Senkiw and Joey Penner make up the garage-pop, art-rock band.

Their influences range from the Beatles and Radiohead to Ween and Nirvana, yet the music they create has an inexplicably original sound and vibe. Always willing to experiment creatively the Waking Eyes often rotate their instrumental duties, but maintain a core set-up with Rusty and Matt playing guitar and singing, Steve on the drums, and Joey playing bass. Piano, organ, and other keyboards are often used to provide the songs with the band's signature sound. The Waking Eyes consider their ability to pen catchy pop-rock songs as their most important asset and with all four members cited as contributing writers they have a seemingly endless supply of new material from which to draw.

The band has released one-full length album entitled, "Combing the Clouds" in early 2002 with former member Myron Schulz. The album received rave reviews from the Winnipeg Free Press, Exclaim, Umbrellamusic.com and AllmusicGuide.com as well as a 5 star review from Canoe.ca and the Calgary Sun. Topping the charts at several Campus radio stations across Canada, the album was also featured on a CBC RadioSonic Listening Post. In the last year the Waking Eyes have toured Western Canada, played New Music West in Vancouver and the International Pop Overthow Festival in Los Angeles. Another run at Western Canada and perhaps a tour out East will keep the Waking Eyes busy through the first half of 2003.
