The Uncle Bill Roach Band

The Uncle Bill Roach Band - Back From Iraq lyrics

rate me

Standing in line at LAX, I was on my way home

There was a soldier there in front of me had his desert camos on

I said “Hey! You comin' or you goin'?” He said “I'm goin' to Iraq

I've got a five day old son back in Lubbock and I just can't wait to get back

from Iraq.”

He said his name was Private Johnny Lee and he didn't really like to fight

But that all changed on 9-11 he was doin' what was right

Well I thanked him for his service and then I helped him with his pack

I gave him my card and said “Call me son, just as soon as you get back

from Iraq.”

Then I looked him in the eye and I said

(Chorus)

“You are the reason for the freedom we have today

And I'll mention your name to the big man tonight when I get down on my knees to pray

Hell, you don't even know me but you lay your life on the line

You are the reason. Your a hero of mine”.

(Bridge)

I thought about that soldier boy almost every single night

And I hoped him and his buddies they was doin' alright

But all is fair in love and war and only God knows

The destiny of his children and that's just the way it goes

It's been two years last November and I never got that call

I found his wife out in Lubbock, She was workin' at the mall

She said Johnny never made it. It was a roadside attack

He only had six days to go before he was comin' back

from Iraq

So I told her about the night at the airport when I looked at her husband and I said

(Chorus)

“You are the reason for the freedom we have today

And I'll mention your name to the big man tonight when I get down on my knees to pray

Hell you don't even know me but you lay your life on the line

You are the reason. Your a hero of mine

You're a hero of mine”.
