Slim Dusty

Slim Dusty - Marty lyrics

rate me

With the clothes that he stood up in and a smile full of devilment

Marty left the hospital and we wondered where he went

To the nearest bar most likely for I guess hell never learn

And a few more months and a lot more drinks mean Marty will return

Theyll bring him and his flagon in from a barroom floor somewhere

But thats alright with Marty hed as soon be here than there

For theres no one waitin home for him she left him long ago

And a boarding house in old Balmain is the only home he knows

For Martys one of the losers and theres nothing you can do

Martys one of the battlers and hes been a good mate to you

But lifes got a down on him and thats the way its bound to end

Doesnt seem fair to Marty everybodys friend

He broke every regulation he bent each and every rule

But how it eased the dreary ward routine when Marty played the fool

Oh his knowing grin and ridicule made a pompous man look small

While Marty smiled a handshake made a friend feel ten feet tall

Hes the life of every party and hes loved by everyone

But when the partys over and the drinking is all done

What is left of all the laughter where have all the bright lights gone

To a boarding house in old Balmain and four bare walls alone

For Martys one of the losers and theres nothing you can do

Martys one of the battlers and hes been a good mate to you

But lifes got a down on him and thats the way its bound to end

Oh it doesnt seem fair to Marty everybodys friend
