“Sights”, by London Grammar
London Grammar is one of those bands with enormous success in record sales but less exposure to the cameras and flashes.
They first started with “Hey Now” posted online, a track that now has over three million plays. Then their debut album sold in 250,000 copies. All this happened while Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke were in the spotlight. But London Grammar outsold them both.
Nottingham University was the place where the three band members met. First, there were frontwoman Hannah Reid and guitarist Dan Rothman, and then Dot Major, whom they met in a student union. Ministry of Sound signed them in 2012, straight from university and managers Ross Allen and Big Life made sure they were ready and grown up before anything was released. And then last year, in September, we got “If You Wait”.
Now they just ended a tour in Australia (who wants to claim them as its own!). The Sydney Morning Herald said that they’re almost anonymous in their home country and Australia was the first to play and listen to the band’s music.
London Grammar is said to be part of the post-xx generation, along with Daugther and James Blake. Hannah Reid’s voice has been compared with that of Florence Welch from Florence and the Machine although we can say that Reid has a more subtle touch in her vocals. Overall, the band’s sound bears influences from Massive Attack, Portishead or Radiohead.
Although for London Grammar this is still happening fast, they should get used to the fame and fans. People love them and expect more of the beautiful music they shared so far. Listen to “Sights” below, released only a few hours ago:
