Lenna Kuurmaa (born September 26, 1985 in Tallinn, Estonia) is an Estonian musician, singer, songwriter, and a member of the girl group Vanilla Ninja. Born to Rain and Anne Kuurmaa, she has one brother, Raido, who is 3 years older.
At the young age Lenna joined the ETV girls choir and had a great interest in, and studied music. At this time Lenna was learning to play the violin.
Lenna’s hobbies are music and sports, she likes soccer (football), enjoys dancing, listening to music and of course she likes to sing. Preferring R&B, Hip-Hop, and Punk, she was influenced by the 80’s music era and likes bands Depeche Mode, The Rasmus, and P!nk.
Lenna Kuurmaa grew up in Tallinn and there she was educated and attended the same secondary school with Maarja Kivi.
After leaving school Lenna with her class mate Maarja Kivi and 2 other Estonian girls of similar age Piret Järvis and Katrin Siska, met a producer in Tallinn and together formed the band Vanilla Ninja. Lenna played guitar but also developed into the lead singer and the band had great success across Europe and in Japan. The band was also a contestant in the Eurovision Song Contest 2005. Later Lenna expanded into writing songs for the band, with one of her songs entered for the Estonian 2007 Eurovision Song Contest, titled “Birds Of Peace”. However the band was unsuccessful and the entry was not chosen.
Lenna Kuurmaa lives in Tallinn the capital of Estonia. She is fluent in Estonian, German, and English, and Lenna cooks and likes Chinese food. Lenna is unmarried, has a dog (labrador) named Ninja. She has green eyes, has a pierced tongue and has recently had a controversial tattoo to her left leg. Lenna’s natural hair is fair - light brown, but she styles it blond or black.
Lenna has achieved very much in her career, besides becoming the heart of Vanilla Ninja as singer, musician and song writer. She has appeared in musical plays, “The King and I”, “Voice of Music”, and “Snoppy Musical”. Participating in many Estonian TV talent shows including “Fizz Superstar 2002” and others alike, Lenna is highly respected in the music industry.
A national icon in Estonia and known across Europe, Lenna is well regarded for her talent as a singer. In October 2006 at Tallinn in Estonia, Lenna with other soloists sang before “The Queen of Great Britain”, “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II”, and “His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh”. Later Lenna was again to give state performance for other dignitaries.
Since 2006 Vanilla Ninja was quietened due to legal actions in Germany, but Lenna has continued to perform live with the band, plus also singing solo and has covered a wide range of solo performances including, Christmas melodies, gospel, folk, traditional Estonian, and covered some older popular songs with a variety of bands and artists. Recently she has recorded songs in Estonian language with Estonian bands, but to date she remains a band member of Vanilla Ninja.
In October 2007 Lenna established herself as an actress in the Estonian movie film “Kuhu Põgenevad Hinged” (“Where Souls Go”) in which Lenna acts a satanist girl named Maya, in a film about a troubled teenager.
She is an actress in Estonian serial “Kodu keset Linna”, where she acts a young teenage girl named Angela.
