Phillip Phillips crowned the winner of American Idol season 11The season 11 of the singing competition American Idol crowned the 21-year-old Phillip Phillips as its winner. Scotty McCreery was the one whi handed him the trophy on Wednesday night, May 23rd. Phillip beat out Jessica Sanchez after earning a standing ovation from the judges after his performance of winner's song "Home" on Tuesday night.

The Georgia boy broke into tears under the confetti, with a record of 132 million votes. "It's been such an honor to be up on this stage playing with everybody...all the fans out there, thank y'all for voting for us," Phillips said before the results were announced. "It's just been crazy."

Earlier that night, Phillip had a duet with John Fogerty to sing "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" and "Bad Moon Rising". Jessica and other female finalists joined Chaka Khan for a medley of "Ain't Nobody" and "I'm Every Woman". The Top 2 contestants later joined forces to sing "Up Where We Belong".

The American Idol finale also featured a performance by judge Steven Tyler and his band, Aerosmith, who debuted their new single "Legendary Child," as well as fellow panelist Jennifer Lopez, who sang with Latin duo Wisin and Yandel two songs "Goin' In" & "Follow The Leader". Also took the stage John Fogerty, Rihanna, Chaka Khan, Neil Diamond, Reba McEntire, Jennifer Holliday and six season female winner Jordin Sparks.

A surprise marriage proposal by season five's resident heartthrob contestant, Ace Young, who offered a ring to his long-term girlfriend (and season three runner-up) Diana DeGarmo heat up the show.
