5 TIMES WE SAW TIKTOK CHANGE THE MUSIC SCENE

5 TIMES WE SAW TIKTOK CHANGE THE MUSIC SCENEBeing self-quarantined Is not the funniest scenario I can think of, although it helps me focus on work and creative stuff to do. That creative outlet is what most people were looking for when they downloaded TikTok. The app, developed in by the Chinese based company ByteDance in 2016, has had outstanding growth in the last couple of years, as it was released in 2018. And its numbers just spiked up during these complicated times we ought to stay home.

According to MusicBusinessWorldWide, the numbers just keep going up for TikTok, escalating an 18 percent on the downloads from Apple's AppStore in the US. Going from 1.7 million downloads between 9-15th of March to 2 million downloads during March 16-22nd.

The trend repeats itself worldwide, as the number of downloads grew 5% in the period 1-23rd of March, reaching 84.8 million. With almost half the globe on quarantine measures and sports, like the NBA expert picks basketball games, going through a break, TikTok rose even more to the spotlight.

That explains the popularity of this app, but it is the app and its challenges that had an incredible effect on the biggest artists of the moment. TikTok is this generation's Vine, with a similar premise, short, funny videos, either lip syncing, acting or dancing, perfect to go viral in any platform.

The first example of those challenges influence is the #YeehawChallenge, yes, the one that brought to the mainstream the one and only Lil Nas X, the challenge consisted of changing from normal clothes to farm/cowboy/cowgirl outfit, while the song plays in the background. The song first reached No. 19 on the Billboard 100 chart, before reaching No.1 spot and stayed there for a record 19 weeks straight.

Drake's another artist that can testify how challenges make you go viral, although the first one was not in TikTok, that is the #InMyFeelingsChallenge that consisted on getting off of your vehicle normally while it was going in a slow, whilst being filmed from the inside and you dance walking next to the car. The bloopers for that challenge were something else.

This year, #FlipTheSwitchChallenge took us back to that year, and that exact album Scorpion, where "Nonstop" was first released. 2 years later, we've seen this trend and go viral to an insane extent. It consists of 2 people dancing in front of a bathroom until the lyrics "I just switched the flip" are rapped, the lights go off and back on to see the people had exchanged their clothing. It's simple, it's funny and Arod and JLo did it, so what's there not to love?

If you want to find out how to take a song to leap 78 positions ask Megan Thee Stallion and her song "Savage", as she took to TikTok to make the song viral with a pretty cool choreography and in less than a month the song jumped from the No.98 of the Billboard Hot 100 to #20. She had everyone dance to that banger song, including Keke Palmer, and Hayley and Justin Bieber. There you have it the #SavageChallenge.

K Camp was not doing too bad, but his whole career blew up when his song "Lottery (Renegade)". It took a 14-year-old classic dancer and her TikTok account to see how quickly the trends grow. The teenager got to meet K Camp and him personally thanked her for the unexpected help she gave him, doubling his monthly listeners in Spotify up to 7.6 million #RenegadeDance

Someone told Chance The Rapper he could play with TikTok challenges and eventually he made one, but this time was free-for-all competition as he claimed that the 10 best TikTok Dancers of his song "Groceries", would receive a year worth of groceries. The track reached the No.14 on the Billboard's Rap Digital Song Sales Chart. #Groceries

So those are some examples of why we say and know TikTok is very much leading the way for many artists and their content. Do you have more examples of this? What songs would you have included here?
