That's how I know I'm here

I hitched a ride with a carnival show didn't bother to ask where they was going
and I eased my mind with all the rum i could find 'cause some things just aint worth knowing
they hired me on and the hours were long and the work it was as dirty as any
it the night we would sing and good times it would bring the women and the spirits were many
but things they got funny when i asked for my money and quite a large sum i was owed
and the last thing i saw was a fist to my jaw i woke up on the side of the road

with blood on my teeth face down on the tracks that's how i know i'm here

i took up shelter with agnes the mute, she wasn't much for conversation
so before long it was time to move on, i headed for the nearest train station
life it aint easy but it aint about easy, it aint about just getting by
and i aint here just to stay above ground or to sleep walk through life til i die

with the dust in my eyes and the wind at my back thats how i know i'm here
with an ache in my soul asleep on the tracks thats how i know i'm here

i've been robbed i've been swindled been beaten been torn been left for dead in the street
but i've been fighting since the day i was born and i always get back on feet
life it aint easy but it aint about easy, it aint about just getting by
