Azerbaijan's duo Ell/Nikki won 2011 Eurovision Contest
There were two unknowns from Azerbaijan the big winner of 2011 Eurovision Song Contest that took place Saturday night, May 14.
Nigar Jamal and Eldar Gasimov, who go by the name Ell/Nikki, earned the most points in Saturday night's Grand Finale in Düsseldorf, Germany for their classic pop ballad with a catchy refrain, "Running Scared".
"I'm just a housewife with two kids," Nikki said at the press conference afterward. "My only dream was to represent my country."
The act from Azerbaijan gathered 221 points from the votes while Italy and Sweden came in second and third place respectively.
It was the first time that Azerbaijan has won the contest in the songfest's 56-year history. It's a major victory for Azerbaijan, which has only competed in Eurovision since 2008. Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, will be next year's host of Eurovision Song Contest.
