Carrie Higgins - The River lyrics
rate meCarrie Higgins - The River
“The day is bright. The sun is hot.
I fear it will grow hotter
My brow is wet. My mouth is dry.
Child go and fetch some water.
Go through the bush and there you’ll find the river”
Um baba, um baba, um baba – Um baba, um baba um
So the girl set out with jug on head,
Glad to please her father
Remembering the words he said,
“Please go and fetch some water”
So she went through the bush… past a coconut tree
… ( response: but she did not see the river )
Then she came to a swamp and met a little frog
( response )
On she went past a snake pit
( response )
Across the plains she saw an elephant
( response )
Then she looked up and saw an egret flying
( response )
On she went…. through the dry sand……..
Then the sand got muddy……
It got real wet……
She found stepping stones…….
Which led her to the river
So she took the jug. She filled it up high
Put it on her head and let her feet fly…..
Over the stepping stones….etc
(Go through list in reverse)
…Back through her village to her little grass hut
Took the jug off her head but ALAS! Not a drop of water
She had run too fast and it had all spilled out
So before her father could see her…she….
Ran through the village – through the bush
(go through forward sequence again)
…which, again, led her to the river
So she took the jug. She filled it up high
Put it on her head. But this time her feet didn’t fly
She walked slowly now…..over the stepping stones
(reverse order again)
…Back through the village to her little grass hut.
Took the jug off her head and gave it to her father.
And her father picked up the jug and drank from it
And he said, “Oh blessed child, I thank you so –
And you did not spill ONE DROP of water!
The father was very pleased and this made the girl….
HAPPY!
