AMY GRANT

AMY GRANT - Better Than A Hallelujah lyrics

rate me

God loves a lullaby

In a mother's tears in the dead of night

Better than a Hallelujah sometimes.

God loves a drunkards cry,

The soldier's plea not to let him die

Better than a Hallelujah sometimes.

We pour out our miseries

God just hears a melody

Beautiful the mess we are

The honest cries of breaking hearts

Are better than a Hallelujah

The woman holding on for life,

The dying man giving up the fight

Are better than a Hallelujah sometimes

The tears of shame for what's been done,

The silence when the words won't come

Are better than a Hallelujah sometimes.

We pour out our miseries

God just hears a melody

Beautiful the mess we are

The honest cries of breaking hearts

Are better than a Hallelujah

Better than a church bell ringing,

Better than a choir singing out, singing out.

We pour out our miseries

God just hears a melody

Beautiful the mess we are

The honest cries of breaking hearts

Are better than a Hallelujah

Repeat Chorus

i think it's a matter of perspective...i don't hear the song demeaning "hallelujah". i hear the emphasis on a lost and hurting person crying out to God. Psalm 51:17 says, "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise." The Lord is close to those who are broken hearted. When someone cries out to God with total sincerity and honesty, it truly gets God's attention. God wants an honest heart over a religious praise. It's beautifully written. Jesus came to seek and save the lost and dying...that's what I hear in this song.

Does anybody even care that this song is a theological aberration? Yes, it is a touchy-feely tune but it is pablum for the Scripturally illiterate. This song is not Scriptural. Pure and simple. The word "Hallelujah" is the highest form of worship in the entirety of God's creation. The elders surrounding the throne of God in heaven fall on their faces and cast their crowns at the Lamb's feet in utter awe and reverence when the word is spoken. The entirety of God's creation in heaven, earth and under the earth are moved to worship God when that word is spoken! Yet this woman dares to suggest that she's come up with something better? Can anyone improve on the Divine imperative to Worship the Creator? I think not! It pains me to see how easily this gullible generation swallows hook line and sinker anything that is packaged as "Christian" these days. The attitude seems to be, "Who cares? It sounds nice so, it must be good! Right?"

I think its a nice song except the part" better than a hallelujah" we must first understand what hallelujah is. My understanding of it is that it means praise God. Nothing is better than praising God we were created for that specific reason. At no point in life can anything be better than praising God the angels do it 24/7 how much more shouldn't we. Yes God loves it when we come to him with all our hearts, in our pain, as a refuge, etc but to say that that's better than a hallelujah I must disagree because even in the midst of pain God deserves our praise. Hallelujah is the Greek mode of spelling the Hebrew words, which are translated "Praise Ye Jehovah." Notice Hallelu"jah" ends with Jah. Jah is a shortened form of Jehovah. Most people have no idea that when they say Hallelujah they are actually saying "Praise Jehova
