| Nme | | Well, who would’ve seen this coming? While the rest of The Strokes doze in the poppy field (or quaff cauffeee in Manhattan) it appears Albert Hammond Jr is skipping down the yellow brick road to Oz. His debut solo album, 2006’s ‘Yours To Keep’, was a bit unkempt and introspective, as if he was being careful not to pose any threat to the status of The Mothership. But as the band relax, it seems Hammond has done what Graham Coxon did with ‘Happiness In Magazines’ (albeit after leaving Blur): stopped apologising for going it alone and made a gloriously freewheeling guitar-pop album....full text |
| | Billboard | | Recorded in Albert Hammond Jr.'s native New York, "Como Te Llama" is the solo Stroke's follow-up to his lauded 2006 debut, "Yours to Keep." The album is filled with big guitar noise and mildly incongruous but not unpleasant mixtures of modern riffs ("Rocket"), new wave basslines ("Victory at Monterey") and retro hooks and melodies ("Miss Myrtle"). Like any solo record by a member of a groundbreaking and unique band, it's easy to hear Hammond's influence on the Strokes' music. The set's two opening tracks, for instance, contain familiar trilling guitars and vocal reverb, and the guitar lines mimic the melody in a very recognizable style on "The Boss Americana." But "Llama" has a much poppier flavor than anything the Strokes have ever recorded, once again setting Hammond apart from his gritty rock bandmates....full text |
| | Musicomh | Second time round, is the prospect of a solo album from Albert Hammond Jr more or less frightening? He may have been touring with The Strokes over the last couple of years, but where does his heart really belong: to Julian Casablancas et al or to centre stage?
After all, it's 20 months since Yours To Keep and nearly 30 since First Impressions Of Earth. Two solo albums since the last Strokes effort is starting to look dangerously like a career move....full text |
